Scituate, Marshfield, and Duxbury, Massachusetts

Scituate, Marshfield, and Duxbury are collectively responsible for ~$73 million in FEMA Flood Insurance claims: nearly a quarter of all of total for the entire state of Massachusetts. Unaddressed, sea level rise is only expected to make things worse.

In their effort to reduce the risk to their public infrastructure and natural resources (including salt marshes and shellfish) from impacts of sea level rise, the communities worked together to identify adaptation strategies and begin public dialogue around risk, vulnerability, and options.

After research and deliberation, the communities recommended the following:

  • Increase setbacks
  • Acquire properties
  • Site buildings outside of flood zones
  • Elevate structures
