Block Island was interested in assessing their risks from climate change and sea level rise, especially potential impacts on their ferry terminals and associated infrastructure.
To that end, the community worked to explore short and long-term engineering solutions including:
- Elevating port infrastructure (piers and roads)
- Relocating/re-aligning roads or structures
- Increasing the height of breakwaters and revetments
- Fortifying structures
To further assess impacts of sea level rise to the islands natural resources, the town commissioned a one-month study of salt pond tidal measurements.
